Fourth Annual Alternative Dispute Resolution Symposium: The Relationship between Culture and Disputing Processes
The 2009 ADR Symposium is co-sponsored by the Dispute Resolution Society, Feerick Center for Social Justice, the New York State Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section, and the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
This Symposium will explore the relationship between culture and disputing processes.
Keynote speaker, Professor Oscar Chase of New York University Law School and author of LAW, CULTURE, AND RITUAL: DISPUTING SYSTEMS IN CROSS-CULTURAL CONTEXT, will offer a cultural analysis of disputing processes based on both U.S and non-western disputing procedures. Professor Chase defines culture as the traditional ideas, norms, and values widely shared by a society and through which that society attaches meaning to existence. He argues that these norms shape a society’s disputing processes, and in turn, the disputing processes produce and reproduce procedures that resonate effectively with the dominant culture.
Professor Chase’s keynote address will be followed by and Q & A period.
During the second half of the program, a group of panelists drawn from academia and legal practice will respond to the issues raised by Professor Chase.
