2009 marks a transformative moment in Afghanistan's institutionalization of democracy. While the presidential election process was certainly not without its flaws, that the democratic process took hold at all in a country that has been through so much represents an enormous achievement. Reflecting on the tumultuous events of the past few months, Mr. B. Murali of UNDP reflects on the challenges faced in pursuing development and democracy in Afghanistan and looks forward to how the issues will play out as the nation moves forward.
